Catechesis of the Good Shepherd
Sofia Cavalletti, a Hebrew Scripture scholar, and Gianna Gobbi, a trained Montessori teacher, joined together in 1954 in Italy to develop what is now called Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, a Montessori approach to children's catechesis for ages 3-12. The beauty of Maria Montessori's philosophy harmonizes with our Catholic Faith and engages children in the tactile experience and the reality of the loving God who took on human flesh and became one of us to save us. Young children receive presentations on the Infancy Narratives of Jesus' early life, they learn the names and placements of Altar Materials, the Geography of Israel, Jerusalem, the gestures we do at Mass, the Sacrament of Baptism, parables of the Kingdom, the Eucharistic Presence, and the Good Shepherd.
